Architect Will Fung grew up in Canberra, and recalls with awe the “the pure forms” of Colin Madigan’s brutalist National Gallery of Australia, opening in 1982 and the High Court of Australia completed a few years later. Fung’s Sydney studio, CO-AP is influenced by this very particular Australian strain of modernism, applied to great acclaim in the residential sector.

“Of course I’m marked by the strict compositional aspect of the best Canberra architecture,” he says. “But also by the way the buildings sit within the native bush setting.”

CO-AP's residential work takes inspiration from the way those iconic buildings respond to their site. Whether single family dwellings or multi-residential developments, a CO-AP design is notable for strength and confidence of line, and an elegant articulation of internal space. Often, the outside feels almost integrated with the interior.

“I like to think some of that geometric sensibility that set the the tone from my childhood finds its way into my adult work,” says Fung.
