Artist Lauren Brincat is first-generation Australian, born in western Sydney to Egyptian-European immigrants. Her peripatetic practice has seen her live and make work in cities as varied as Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Stockholm, New York and Mexico City.

“Art is my first language, English my adopted tongue,” she says, deferring to the work as a means of explaining her worldly view. That oeuvre employs video and performance, sculpture and installation to probe historical ruptures and failures of language. By distancing us from a logical, direct, language-based understanding, her work opens the door to multiple perspectives and interpretations.
