The iconic Barcelona chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929 and is one of the most recognised pieces of furniture of the last century. With a frame constructed in single piece of premium grade stainless steel, hand ground and buffed to mirror finish and upholstery of 120 individual panels hand-sewn from a single cowhide.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) trained in the family stonemason business in Berlin, before studying architecture. He first worked at Peter Behrens’ offices where Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius started out, setting up his own practice in 1914. His tubular steel furniture of the mid-1920s took the world by storm, and in 1929 he created the German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exhibition, a comprehensive and enduring example of the International Style.

Knoll products are defined by a distinct modern sensibility. From classics by the likes of Mies van der Rohe to ground-breaking designs by contemporary creatives including Marc Newson, David Adjaye, Barber Osgerby and Rem Koolhaas.
