Bond restaurant

Location:
Sydney
Type:
Restaurant
Year:
2001
Architect:
Idiom

Initially, Idiom Design Practice was engaged to refurbish the foyer of the grand former State Bank building in Philip Street, Sydney.

Then the tenancy off the foyer was taken over by a restaurateur who wanted the office space converted into a contemporary cafe/restaurant called Bond to cater to the breakfast and lunch trade in Sydney's legal belt.

"It was timed nicely," says Idiom's Director, Philip Chia, "as we could design the restaurant to complement the foyer,"

Bond was an exercise in minimalism: Playing with the shape and form of the space, we discovered that tile main foyer had 3 double height space that carried through the tenancy which gave us an opportunity to sculpt the ceiling the timber floors were stained a walnut colour and entry to the restaurant from the foyer is via big walnut-framed sliders.
