The ‘bondi penthouse’, a single family residence located in Bondi Beach, Australia. a contemporary addition perched on top of an existing building constructed in the 1920s, this dwelling is concealed from passersby on the street by the facade parapet. doubling as the roof terrace’s railing, inhabitants have unobstructed panoramic views of the ocean over the established facade’s extension.
It’s a three bedroom and three and a half bathroom penthouse that also features a large deck terrace and an unexpected indoor/outdoor swimming pool. That’s not what you’d expect to see on top of a building. There was an existing alcove on the building and this provided the new owners with an entry point. They added a new spiral staircase creating a very different look than the existing one, a little more modern.
In fact, there’s a very clear distinction between the already existing building and the new addition. It’s a clear delimitation between old and new that isn’t visible from the street. The contrast of old and new was neither a compromise nor a hindrance; the materials and forms used by the architects were meant to amalgamate the two structures.
The new structure has white metallic cladding with interesting geometries that make up each panel. However, this light coloured material does not dominate the original structure, but instead, complements the lightness of its solid masonry construction. The structure’s white metal cladding maintains its private existence amidst the bustling beachside town. the exterior perimeter is pulled inward and setback from the established footprint below allowing natural light to penetrate into a swimming pool room situated on the home’s lower level.
Upon entering the lower level of the dwelling, a central spiral stair below a large circular skylight leads up to the kitchen, living spaces and roof terrace. views of the nearby beach are revealed to the bedrooms placed along the north facade. enclosed with glass doors, the east facade can be completely opened to access the open air sundeck and introduce the ocean breeze. The interior beautifully mimics its ultra-modern exterior.
