The Hyatt Regency Coolum is located on Coolum Beach beneath Coolum mountain on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Within the centre of the resort complex is a Health and Spa facility. This project involved the conversion of an existing building which contained office areas into an expanded health and spa facility to include five treatment rooms, ensuites, office and laundry. The Hyatt Regency Coolum is universally recognised as not only the first but also the best and most successful integrated destination resort in Australia. In particular the high visitation by corporate groups is testament to that sector's significant acceptance of this project type. Hyatt Regency Coolum has been designed as a village: domestic, small-scale and non-domineering. The concept has endeavoured to achieve variety in subtle ways rather than proposing ubiquitous "design images" throughout the site. The complex is the equivalent of a 500 room hotel, arranged in free-standing, two-storey townhouse blocks sited over 145 hectares, with a championship 18-hole golf course, extensive health spa and numerous swimming pool and leisure facilities. The project was awarded the RAIA Qld Chapter Tourism Award in 1990. Bligh Voller Nield has continued its close involvement with Hyatt Hotels and the resort owner, Kumagai Gumi, and has recently completed a major upgrade of the Village Square restaurant complex.
