PROJECTS IN MELBOURNE

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY JOHN GOLLINGS

PROJECTS PHOTOGRAPHED BY PETER BENNETTS

An explicit client instruction in the brief for his house was to combine the exuberant high modernism of the sets of the Peter Sellers film The Party with traditional North African architecture. This narrative theme deepened to more than a style and shaped the house. Having just sold a residence consisting of one large open space, the clients also wanted the flexibility of separate rooms. Bright colours were required internally that could still be connected to natural and hand made dyes. The structural slab was ground down and the walls rendered a warm mud colour.

The house has parallel walls, creating layered space back from the direct sunlight. The punctuation in these parallel walls gives the space their character. To the street, the house presents unfenestrated walls and spaces, open garden courtyards, verandahs, porches and internal open rooms, each with varying degrees of seclusion.
