Using the Burra Charter as a guide, the most important fabric have been repaired and conserved, whilst obsolete spaces were replaced with a carefully inserted new element.
Taking into account the complex contextual situation of the surrounding heritage and new buildings, and the building's own history, the new element uses proportions and form drawn from the surrounding as well as from the existing building, and a palette of glass, zinc and stainless steel to distinguish itself from the old.
A new void, bridge links and glazed floors provides articulate yet secure bond between old and new.
