UK

Established in 2002, Tom Dixon is a British design and manufacturing company of lighting and furniture.

With a recognised commitment to innovation and a mission to revive the British furniture industry, the Tom Dixon brand is inspired by the unique heritage, the individualistic innovation and the robust, no nonsense engineering of these small islands.

Tom Dixon launches new collections annually with products sold more than 60 countries.

Tom rose to prominence in the mid 1980's as "the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture".

By the end of the 80's, he was designing chairs for powerhouse Italian brands like Cappellini; by the mid-nineties, he had created his own company, 'Eurolounge', to make and sell his work.

His earlier pieces are now collectables and have changed hands at auction houses around the globe.

With a recognised commitment to innovation and a mission to revive the British furniture industry, Dixon has gone on to lead the British industrial revolution sweeping the design world.

Early on, Dixon had gotten involved in design, craft, factory management, design consultancy, marketing, sales and retail – all with no training or funding – and today finds satisfaction working on the initiation of a concept all the way through to its interaction with the consumer, as he’s interested in the whole chain.

He likes change and is quickly distracted, so it’s hardly surprising that he has gone from lighting and furniture design to owning a restaurant at his headquarters in London andconverting a water tower into a home for himself.

“ I’ve involved myself in so many different aspects and I’m not able to concentrate enough but, frankly, I get bored very easily, so it’s not such a bad thing.

He views his lack of a formal design education as a major advantage as it has allowed him to experiment without constraints:

“I think being self-taught is the reason why I didn’t give up. If you knew all of the things I know now, you probably wouldn’t get involved."
